Know before you go

Haley's Top 5 Tips:

  • If you a wine lover, I highly recommend visiting Porto. Porto is the birthplace of port wine,  a sweet red wine, harvested mostly in the neighboring Douro Valley. I didn’t have a chance to do any wine tasting at the actual wineries in the Valley, but have heard amazing things and hope to experience it for myself one day!
  • Lisbon is the second oldest capital in the world, behind Athens, Greece. It is situated among seven hills so don’t forget to bring your sneakers!
  • The water in Portugal is safe to drink but I can guarantee that it will taste a little weird to you. This is due to chlorination and high mineral content in some areas.
  • Tipping 5-10% is standard for meals in Portugal as long as you are happy with the meal. You do not, however, have to tip for a coffee or other beverage.
  • Sintra is a quick 40-minute train ride from Lisbon and is essentially where all fairytales take place, in one of its many castles! It’s a must-see / must-do day trip during your time in Lisbon!
